‘Tis the summer for free indie rock downloads, I’m convinced. Spin Magazine has a couple of compilation albums floating around. Most notable, editors’ picks contrive a 16-song collection of Bonnaroo bands. Local Natives, Phoenix, Gossip and The Young Veins contributed to this one. |

Indie bands releasing one-off’s is the new hype, too. New Young Pony Club released a re-mix of “We Want To,” a song off their new (April 2010) album, The Optimist. Sign up for the mailing list on their site and score the download. |

New York hip-hoppers, Northern State, are no strangers to the indie rock scene. One of the three, Hesta Prynn, has embarked on an electro-pop project under her own name. Her new single, “Can We Go Wrong,” is featured on her site for free download. It’s a little Le Tigre, a little New Young Pony Club and all dance. |
