Friday morning (July 29) a Chuck Berry statue was revealed where the musician was born in St. Louis, MI. The tribute was almost blocked by Elsie Glickert, a former University City council member who believed whatever his musical contributions his history with the law and women didn’t merit such an honor.
She managed to get the signatures of 100 people who were against the statue, but there was no trouble at today ceremony, just an a supportive crowd for the 84 year old rocker.
In addition to the fans assembled in St. Louis fellow musicians also had warm words to offer Berry including Elvis Costello, Little Richard, and Joe Perry.
And Berry had his own words to express his gratitude to the well wishers gathered around the statue, “I don’t know how to speak. I can sing a little bit. Thank you and I love you all.”
