Stark Trek fans just got amazing news: actor Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as the villain in the upcoming sequel, which will be helmed by JJ Abrams.
Cumberbatch’s star has been rising in the last few years, thanks to his roles in films such as Atonement, Sherlock Holmes, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and War Horse. He’ll also play Smaug in the upcoming Hobbit film, directed by Academy Award winner Peter Jackson.
It has yet to be announced which role Cumberbatch will play, but there are rumors that Abrams has chosen Khan as villian in the upcoming film.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana will return to the USS Enterprise, reprising their roles as Captain Kirk, Spock and Uhura. Star Trek 2 opens hits theaters May 17th, 2013.
