Stream Lee Ranaldo’s New Solo Album

Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo announced the release of his ninth solo album in late 2011, and now a week before it’s release, listeners will be able to stream the album exclusively at the Rolling Stone. Between the Times and the Tides will be released on the 20th March on the record label Matador.

Ranaldo played a series of small, successful gigs in New York, in which footage was used to create the video for the album’s first single, Off the Wall, which is available to view on YouTube now. The album features an all-star cast, if you will, including the fine guitar work of Wilco’s Nel Cline, as well as Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and underground renaissance man Jim O’Rourke.

The album has also been the subject of many positive reviews including that of Uncut’s Rob Young, who stated “In some ways…the best the US underground can offer at this moment, a mature album, as serious-minded as the times demand.”

Ranaldo’s ninth studio album follows that of fellow Sonic Youth member Thurston Moore’s last year, which was received well by critics, although both albums have fueled speculation of the demise of the pioneering alternative band after the separation of Moore and Kim Gordon. Although the band continued commitments and played all the dates of their South American tour, rumors about the band’s status have not been positive. It has been speculated that Sonic Youth’s Lollapalooza show could be the band’s last.
