Wearing a Muslim Hijab, Malaysia’s Yuna Wins American Hearts

Touring the United States in traditional Muslim hijab head covering, singer/songwriter Yunalis Zarai in Alor Setar, or Yuna, showcased her newly released album on the Conan show, stunning live audiences with her flawless voice.

The album, released on April 24 through Fader Label, feature 13 songs, including  two  produced by  Pharrell Williams.

The single “Live Your Life,” one of Pharrell Williams’ co-productions, was released on iTunes in January.

Last year, she was one of MTV Iggy’s Best New Band finalists.

Yuna began, who began writing her songs as a young teenager after she learned to play a guitar, is signed with Fader Label.   She became a sensation after gaining a huge number of fans on MySpace.

Her voice is lyrical and sultry like Sade’s and sweetly pubescent like Suzanne Vega’s.  She will perform at the Lollapalooza concert in August, according to her official website.

Yuna’s track “Mermaid” was chosen as part of Diane Von Furstenberg’s Proud to be Woman (Vol.3) album for International Women’s Day last month.
