In a move perhaps very few people could have predicted, Tom Gabel, frontman and founder of critically acclaimed punk band, Against Me!, has announced that he will soon start treatment to become a female, taking Laura Jane Grace as his name.
In an unprecedented move for any punk musician, Gabel has announced the news after suffering from gender dysphoria for many years.
The process will include undergoing electrolysis treatments and taking hormones over the next few months. Speaking about the decision to announce the news, Gabel stated:
“I’m going to have embarrassing moments and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”
Gabel’s says that his wife supports his decision, adding “For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news. But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”
