Donna Summer: Queen of Disco Dead at 63

Donna Summer died this morning after a battle with cancer, reports TMZ. She was 63 years old.

Summer’s publicist released the following statement:

“Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith,” a family statement said. “While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can’t express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time.”

Born LaDonna Andrea Gaines, Summer was the reigning Queen of Disco in the 70s and 80s,  releasing a string of hits including “Last Dance,” “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls,” “She Works Hard for the Money” and “Love to Love You Baby.”

TMZ reports that Summer, a 5-time Grammy winner, was keeping her illness under wraps while working on a new album.
