The Taste Test: Best Hip Hop Of The Week

Best Feature: Ab-Soul ft. Black Hippy – “Black Lip Bastard” (Remix) (listen)

Kendrick Lamar stated that Ab-Soul’s album Control System is the last piece of the puzzle for the Black Hippy promotional campaign. As a testament to that statement, the last promotional single released for the album was none other than “Black Lipped Bastard” (Remix), which features all members of Black Hippy: Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q and Jay Rock. Now signed to Dr. Dre’s Aftermath/Interscope, Black Hippy display exactly why the hip hop world is at their feet in this track. Not one of them sound the same and it seems like each verse has the epitome of each emcee’s distinct style. – Mark Noisiri

Honorable Mention: Sabrina ft. Norah Jones, Jayo Felony and Illuminati Sky – “I Wanna Shoot Lady Gaga” (Remix) (listen)

Quite the head-scratcher, pop singer Sabrina enlists the talents of Norah Jones, rappers Jayo Felony and Illuminati Sky for the remix of her assault on Lady Gaga. The two rappers attempt to prevent Sabrina from shooting Lady Gaga in their verses in between; making this a very dramatic and ridiculous venture. – Mark Noisiri

Best Artwork: Sunni Colòn – Dearly Beloved (listen/download)

Being a fan of the arts, I have great appreciation for  artist that bring some level of creativity to their album, mixtape, EP, single covers. Sunni Colon will capture your eye instantly with the simple but captivating artwork for his debut free album Dearly Beloved. No words, just the face of a royal cat whose soul piercing green eyes will have you pondering if this is a rap album or should be in an art exhibit. A great piece, and even though I can’t speak on Sunni Colon’s music, I’ll be checking it out soon. – Travis Phillips

Honorable Mention: IsaiahThe3rd – Breaking Bad (listen/download)

Honorable mention goes to IsaiahThe3rd’s fusion of himself and anime character Lupin the 3rd for his “Breaking Bad” mixtape. The style is an attention grabber, and the description of Isaiah fictional character makes it even more intriguing for potential listeners. – Travis Phillips

Best Video: Maroon 5 ft. Wiz Khalifa – “Payphone

Music Videos have been shun by MTV and are glorified on the most excruciating 3-hour B.E.T show. So we’re cutting out the middle man, and presenting you the best videos of the week. This week, Maroon 5′s “Pay Phone” featuring Wiz Khalifa takes the crown by intertwining cinematic elements, eye popping effects, and the most aberrant bank heist story I have ever seen. Don’t watch if you hated the ending of Inception because this ending will also have you scratching your head in confusion. Still worth watching, I define it as a music video that visually looks like a block buster smash with the writing of a B.E.T, straight to television movie. – Travis Phillips

Honorable Mention: Future Sound ft. Zachary Reyes – Sarah (Demo)

Future Sound “Sahra” wins the honorable mention badge; compiling various clips that blends perfectly with his old-school groove. Very retro, quite simple, and incredibly effective.  - Travis Phillips
