In his recent appearance on David Letterman, Bill Murray addressed some of the rumors circulating about his involvement in a potential “Ghostbusters 3″. “That’s about all they want to know at Cannes,” he said. “But, um…They just don’t have a really good script. It’s hard.”
Murray went on to tell Letterman, “It’s hard to make a sequel. That first one was really funny. It was just so darn funny, it’s hard for me…”
Since the project was announce as a possibility, Murray’s interest in returning as Dr. Peter Venkman has been lukewarm to say the least. The National Enquirer (yes, the National Enquirer) even reported that Murray shredded a draft of the script written by his Ghostbusters co-stars Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. According to the tabloid, Murray re-packaged the scraps and sent them back to Aykroyd and Ramis with a note that read: “No-one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts.”
Despite Murray’s reluctance to get behind the project, it appears to keep moving forward. Ivan Reitman (who directed the first two films) says, “There’s always a hope. We keep working on it.” And Dan Aykroyd has even hinted at (wince) using a new actor to play Venkman. However, Ghostbusters alum Sigourney Weaver says she’ll only return for third film if Murray comes back as well, and Rick Mornais (who played the nerdy Louis Tully in the first two films) retired from acting in 1997.
Still, even as recently as this April, in an interview with WGN-TV sports, Murray described a new Ghostbusters as a “possibility.” So who knows…
