I hate to call Daytona a supergroup—the designation is almost always a bad omen and I’m not sure it ever applies to bands on the fringe—but since this collaboration was conceived in ultra-hip Brooklyn, they will likely get that kind of buzz. Daytona is a 3-piece band that includes guitarist/singer Hunter Simpson of Wild Yaks, bassist and ex-Harlem member Jose Boyer and drummer Christopher Lauderdale. Daytona released their EP, Storm So Long, themselves and you’d be right to expect the kind of unrefined, earnest vocals associated with lo-fi records. Musically though, in comparison with the garage rock styling of Wild Yaks and Harlem, Daytona’s sound is cloudy and ethereal, melodies hang in the air and flow lightly into each other while Simpson takes off on shoe-gazing solos.
The song available for stream is “Undertow,” one of the more rocking tunes on the EP with pop appeal and guitar licks reminiscent of some of the brighter moments of The Libertines.
