John Lennon Victorious In NME ‘Ultimate Icon’ Poll

Former Beatles co-frontman John Lennon has triumphed in a readers poll to find the ‘Ultimate Icon’ across British music magazine NME‘s sixty year history.

Overcoming a raft of iconic artists such as David Bowie, Morrissey, Kurt Cobain and protegé Paul McCartney, Lennon’s placing stands as testament to, not only his seminal work with The Beatles, but also to his substantial canon of solo material.

A special tribute edition of NME will be available from Friday, containing posters, classic interviews, revised reviews of albums and conversations with contemporary artists that cite the importance of Lennon to them – including former Jam singer Paul Weller and second place in the ‘Ultimate Icon’ poll, Liam Gallagher.

The full top ten is as follows:

1. John Lennon
2. Liam Gallagher
3. David Bowie
4. Alex Turner
5. Kurt Cobain
6. Amy Winehouse
7. Jimi Hendrix
8. Morrissey
9. Noel Gallagher
10. Ian Curtis
