If you don’t know Gary Clark Jr. yet, you likely haven’t hit the summer festival circuit, subscribed to much Rolling Stone, or lived in Austin, TX.
Clark is a rock and roll dynamo and an act worthy of genuine excitement. Even at only 28 years old, Clark. is an old veteran on the rock and blues circuit, and he’s hometown hero in the Live Music Capital of the World. At 17 years old, Gary had his own day named after him in ATX. He also holds three Austin Music Award titles for “Best Blues and Electric Guitarist”; he may not be deified quite like Stevie Ray and Willie, but he’s getting there. Not bad for a young man who has never released a major label album. That’s all about to change though.
After releasing two albums and an EP on Hotwire, Clark signed on with Warner Bros. and released the four-song Bright Lights EP in late 2010. Rolling Stone knighted Clark the “Best Young Gun of Rock” and went on to rank the effort #40 on in its “Top 50 Albums of 2011,” while Spin named him breakout artist of the month for November 2011. Other acclaim thrown Gary’s has consisted of Entertainment Weekly calling him this generation’s “chosen one,” and The New York Times has said Clark “may be the next Hendrix.” After years on the festival circuit (Austin City Limits Festival, Bonnaroo, Coachella, Sasquatch, Lollapalooza, both nights of Jay-Z’s inaugural Made in America festival, and Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival), it’s high-time for the masses to catch on.
Gary’s full-length Warner Bros. debut, Blak and Blu, is scheduled for an Oct. 22 release. The album was produced by Mike Elizondo (Mastodon, Dr. Dre, Fiona Apple’s Extraordinary Machine), Rob Cavallo (My Chemical Romance, Green Day) and Clark. The lead single, “Ain’t Messin ‘Round,” debuted today. You can listen to it below.
For those of you who have yet to experience Gary Clark Jr., he tells you straight-up how it is on “Bright Lights.” Come Oct. 22, “you gonna know (his) name by the end of the night.”
