If you’re searching for a convenient means of supporting the cause of imprisoned feminist punks Pussy Riot, look no further than the new eBook PUSSY RIOT! A Punk Prayer for Freedom.
If you haven’t been relegated to a media black hole of solitary confinement for the past half-year, you’re presumably aware of the plight of Pussy Riot. Back on February 21, five members of the Russian punk art collective organized a protest gig at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. During the performance, Pussy Riot launched into the song “Virgin Mary, Put Putin Away,” which led to the prompt arrest of Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, and Yekaterina Samutsevich (Masha, Nadya, and Katya, respectively) on the grounds of felony hooliganism motivated by religious hatred. On August 17, the women were sentenced to two years in prison, and a worldwide movement in support of Pussy Riot called for their release.
Last week, Yoko Ono presented Pussy Riot with the LennonOno Grant for Peace Award. As she presented the award to the husband of one of the imprisoned women, Yoko said, “I thank Pussy Riot in standing firmly in their belief for freedom of expression and making all women of the world proud to be women.”
On October 1, Pussy Riot has a court date to appeal their conviction. Supporters of the group have organized a global day of action on that date to call for Pussy Riot’s immediate release. The eBook PUSSY RIOT! A Punk Prayer for Freedom was published by Feminist Press and features 90 pages of unreleased material including the women’s letters from prison, closing courtroom statements, poems, new translations of courtroom documents, and tributes from reputable supporters. The text is now available for a $2.99 download here. All proceeds from the book will support the Pussy Riot legal defense team.
