The Afghan Whigs Prep First Tour in 13 Years, Announce Jimmy Kimmel Performance

The Afghan Whigs

The month of September is upon us, which means American fans will have the opportunity to personally witness the mighty resurgence of The Afghan Whigs. Starting on Sept. 22 with a performance at All Tomorrow Parties’  “I’ll Be Your Mirror” (where frontman Greg Dulli had the honor of officially co-curating the lineup) in Asbury Park, NJ, the world will see The Afghan Whigs embark on their first tour in 13 years.

Since reuniting earlier this year, The Afghan Whigs (Greg Dulli, Rick McCollum, John Curley) have played Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, All Tomorrow’s Parties’ “I’ll Be Your Mirror” in London, and Lollapalooza. When the ‘90s icons hit stages across the country in the coming months, drummer Cully Symington (Okkervil River, Gutter Twins) and multi-instrumentalist Rick Nelson (Polyphonic Spree, Twilight Singers) will be joining them at every stop.

Time Out Chicago characterized the reunion of the Cincinnati rock giants by saying, “There are a few different kinds of reunions. There is, of course, the cynical cash grab. Then there’s the reunion that pretty much picks up where a band left off, or the reunion that offers a chance to see a band that few people were able to see the first time around. But then there are reunions that exist pretty much as if to say, yes, we really were that good, and that’s where you’ll find the Afghan Whigs slotted.”

If there was any doubt concerning the legitimacy of that statement, Afghan Whigs fans laid waste to it by selling 10 of the 26 scheduled stops (with weeks to go before it kicks off).

The band has released two brand new cover songs since reuniting, and you can still download both for free via www.theafghanwhigs.com: “See And Don’t See” (originally recorded by Marie “Queenie” Lyons) and “Lovecrimes” (originally by recorded by Frank Ocean).

Stream: Afghan Whigs, “Lovecrimes (Frank Ocean Cover)” (via The Fader)

You can catch the triumphant return of The Afghan Whigs playing live when they take the stage on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Sept. 19. Set your DVR, or check back with TST for video of highly anticipated performance.
