Download Den: Cody ChesnuTT – That’s Still Mama

Welcome to The Silver Tongue’s Download Den.

Here is where we will pass along the most intriguing and worthwhile songs that we’ve been fortunate enough to discover. Many will be songs we’ve been obsessing over in our homes with the record spinning and a drink in hand, and others will be melodies culled from our inbox that snuck up and got their hooks in us.

We’re not concerned with genre limitations or mere trendiness. We simply want to open the door for you to join us in listening to music that is making us excited about the power of a song. Check out the Download Den daily, and the least we can do is help soundtrack your day.

Cody ChesnuTT

Cody ChesnuTT is an electric soul man with a knockout voice and some truly astounding songs to match. You presumably recognize his unmistakable voice from The Roots’ “The Seed (2.0),” a song which first appeared on ChestnuTT’s sprawling, often masterful debut opus The Headphone Masterpiece back in 2002.

A decade has passed since The Headphone Masterpiece arrived on the scene, and the only material we’ve seen from ChesnuTT was a 2006 live album and his Black Skin No Value from 2010. After putting together a Kickstarter campaign to get his new album released, ChesnuTT hit his goal of $20,000 in funding back in August. ChesnuTT’s album, titled Landing on a Hundred, is a funky, fun and heartfelt new soul classic. Over the course of twelve songs that were recorded at Al Green’s old Royal Studios in Memphis, ChesnuTT consistently delivers serious goods to maximum effect on Landing on a Hundred. Check out the blissed-out funk on “That’s Still Mama,” a song in which Cody honors his mother with a jam that feels like Curtis Mayfield in his prime.

It has been a long time coming, and the patience has proved to be anything but in vain. Landing on a Hundred will be released next week (October 30) via One Little Indian Records. It’s a thing of beauty, and we’re very lucky to have Cody ChesnuTT back. You can stream Landing on a Hundred in full over on NPR.
