Phosphorescent Announces New LP, Muchacho, and Streams “Song For Zula”

Song For ZulaMatthew Houck, better known as the man behind the exceptional folk/country-tinged rock outfit Phosphorescent, announced that his sixth LP under the Phosphorescent moniker will be released March 19 via Dead Oceans.

The album, titled Muchacho, came about during a rough stretch in Houck’s life since releasing 2010′s stunning Here’s to Taking It Easy. A few weeks back, Houck told Spin, “My life, to be honest, sort of fell apart…a lot of this record, for me, is about getting something of what you want and still having your ass handed to you by the world. Like, ‘that’s how it is, muchacho. Handle it.”

A press release for Muchacho said Houck booked a flight to Mexico during that time, where the inspiration for the album’s songs took shape. “I went down there with a guitar and got a little hut on the beach in Tulum, on the Yucatan Peninsula,” Houck said, and Muchacho was the result.

“Song For Zula,” the first song released off the record, is streaming below. Amidst lush and mesmerizing production, Houck’s beautifully pained vocals take advantage of the warmth at his back to sing, “I know love is a fading thing, just as fickle as a feather in a fading stream…Then I saw love disfigure me into something I’m not recognizing.” He finishes the song as a man locked on the wrong side of the glass, delivering a threat atop his vulnerability: “My heart is wild, and my bones are steel, and I could kill you with my bare hands if I was free.”

To borrow from Dave Eggers, “Song For Zola” is both staggering and heartbreaking. Here’s to Phosphorescent seeing how much more we can handle on Muchacho.
