Andhra Pradesh, Telangana MPs set to step up protest against centre

The Andhra Pradesh unit of the Congress, the CPI and the CPI (M) today held separate protests on Parliament Street underlining their demand for Special Category Status (SCS).

Even in the first half of the Budget Session, TDP and YSR Congress MPs had disrupted the House proceeding by protesting inside Parliament.

Senior leaders of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee and Left parties today expressed dismay over separate protests for "Special Category Status" to the state, saying the BJP government will note such "hostilities" and reject the demand.

"Confident that if we stand together, we will convince Government of India (GoI) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi what is due to people of state should be given", Rahul added.

"This afternoon, I joined the protests at Jantar Mantar demanding "Special Status" for Andhra Pradesh".

Last Saturday, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) led by K. Chandrashekhar Rao held a parliamentary meeting with its MPs, after which his daughter, Nizamabad MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha, tweeted that the TRS will raise the demand for states to be allowed to decide on reservation quotas and promises made during the state's division. "We are for special category status of Andhra", Gandhi said. He was participating in a protest organised by the Congress demanding SCS for the State.

Member of Parliaments belonging to the Telugu Desam Party continue to step up pressure to ensure that the promises made to them during the state's bifurcation are met.

The TDP is an ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has been upset over the Central government's failure to grant the special package.

This is not the first time the Congress leader took to social media to express his support for special category status for the state.
