Tillerson Calls on African States to Put Pressure on N.Korea


Tillerson's Africa visit began in Ethiopia, then on the way to Nairobi, he made a stop in Djibouti. But at both news conferences on Friday, the USA journalists were allowed only one question while local journalists in the two countries asked multiple questions.

Ethiopia is now one of Africa's best performing economies and a strong U.S security ally but the government is often accused of stifling dissent and arresting journalist, activists and opposition figures.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson this evening met President Uhuru Kenyatta at the beginning of his three-day visit in the country and assured him of his Government's commitment to Kenya on trade and security.

Mahamat, in his remarks, said his discussions with the US envoy was fruitful, noting the visit was taking place at a time when Africa was firmly embarking on the path to integration and reform.

Analysts highlight the choice of countries visited by Tillerson as a sign of the United States' focus on security issues on the continent.

At least publicly, Moscow has been calling for a meeting, and insisting that it has formally asked Washington if one could be scheduled but has received no response. That prompted Lavrov to dispute her directly.

Tillerson said Chinese investments "do not bring significant job creation locally" and criticized how Beijing structures loans to African government. This marks his first diplomatic trip to Africa, which has become increasingly reliant on China for trade as China has outpaced the U.S.to become its largest trading partner in 2009.

Beijing has pumped billions into infrastructure projects, though critics say the use of Chinese firms and labour undermines their value.

In the Ethiopian capital, Tillerson commented on China's increasing dominance in Africa, warning countries not to "forfeit your sovereignty".

The U.S. has lauded the African Union ( AU ) Commission for its efforts at Africa's integration, describing it as "a force for good".

Mr Tillerson assured President Kenyatta that the USA was also keen to see continental reforms of the business environment but was glad that the judicial reforms in place meant contracts were respected and there was a clear path on investment.

Mnangagwa is desperate to attract foreign investors to kick-start the economy and has promised reforms to safeguard investments.
