He is the first ever Chairman of the Senate who hailed from province of Balochistan.

The ruling PML-N and allies after final consultation in the morning nominated veteran politician from Rawalpindi, Senator Raja Zafarul Haq, as chairman and Usman Kakar from Balochistan as deputy chairman, according PML-N Senator Mushahidullah Khan.

"We are happy for the people of Balochistan & for the federation of Pakistan", Khan tweeted.

Earlier today, the PTI spokesperson confirmed that party will support newly elected Senator Sadiq Sanjrani from Balochistan for the post of Senate chairman.

Monday's elections for the Senate chairman witnessed an unexpected outcome as Sanjrani managed to bag the slot following a much anticipated contest with the ruling PMLN's candidate.

Majority of the opposition parties had supported Sanjrani's candidature and announced to vote for him after he was elected as the member of the Senate for the first time on March 3, 2018 in the Senate elections, in which, half of the chamber's members were elected.

Sadiq Sanjrani's father Khan Muhammad Asif Sanjrani is considered one of the leading tribal elders of Chagai district and now he is a member of the Chagai District Council.

However, even without defections, Sanjrani is in a strong position with support from the PPP [20 votes], PTI [12 votes], Fata independents [8 votes], Balochistan independents [6 votes] and MQM-P [5 votes].

"The face of this house is blackened today", said Mir Hasil Bizenjo, a government minister and ally of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif who was ousted by a Supreme Court ruling last July that his party suggested was influenced by the powerful military. The PTI had early announced that it would neither vote for the PPP, nor the PML-N's nominees during the election for Senate chairman.

Sadiq Sanjrani, who has never been to any legislature previously, is also believed to be enjoying support of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). He also served as special assistant to former chief minister of Balochistan Sanaullah Zehri.

The PML-N, which appeared to be floundering without the backing of other major players in politics, held meetings with allies today to finalise their nominees for the top posts after Sanjrani emerged as the joint opposition's top contender for chairman Senate on Sunday. Senators were then invited to sign the member rolls. The chairman represents both the opposition and treasury benches. PML-N's Raja Zafarul Haq was nominated by the ruling party and supported by its coalition partners.
