Five die in NY helicopter crash

A Dallas firefighter and a NY journalist with ties to North Texas died Sunday night when a helicopter in which they were taking a tour of the city crashed into the East River.

"He was being instructed [to] look for the other helicopter because there was a mayday", Adams said.

The pilot, Richard Vance (pictured), who is from Danbury, Connecticut, said the aircraft went down because of engine failure. The NTSB tweeted that an investigation team of 14 people would arrive in New York Monday morning.

The charter helicopter was hired for a photo shoot. Investigators said the helicopter was flying too high. A review of FAA records shows that there were no fatal injuries in accidents between 2010 and a year ago.

'I have personally not seen this type of accident happen, ' she said about whether she had ever heard of a helicopter shutting down because someone pulled the wrong switch. He said he thought something was unusual when he saw the helicopter flying low before it crashed into the East River, so he started shooting video. Moment later, the aircraft flipped over.

No one answered an email Monday to Vance, a 33-year-old licensed commercial pilot for seven years who's also licensed as a flight instructor.

NTSB investigators have begun working to determine what caused the crash, which killed a Texas firefighter, an Argentine woman, a young video journalist and two others on what authorities said was a charter flight to take photos.

"We will investigate very carefully if there are any safety issues - whether it's particular to this operator or systemic throughout operations - we will issue, if needed, an urgent safety recommendation, and that means that it comes out as soon as it's needed in order to prevent this from happening again", she said.

Business Insider says Trevor Cadigan was "smart, talented, and ambitious" and "made a big contribution" during an internship there.

McDaniel was visiting his longtime friend Trevor Cadigan, who had been living in NY since October 2017 after taking a job with a business magazine, Cadigan's father said.

A video (shown below) captured by a bystander and posted to social media shows the helicopter impacting the water hard in a level attitude with floats deployed, before capsizing to the side. As Cadigan grins widely into the camera, he angles his phone to show McDaniel sitting just behind him.

When emergency workers dove into the frigid waters of New York's East River to reach a downed helicopter on Sunday evening, they found a disturbing scene.

"It took a while for the divers to get these people out", New York City Fire Department Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said at a press conference.

He reported "an engine failure over the East River" and referenced a hotel, while the person at the other end of the transmission had trouble making out what the pilot was saying.
