Lewis Hamilton criticises Max Verstappen for 'silly' move

Hamilton, however, was in no mood to take the criticism and hit back at Verstappen.

Hamilton's Mercedes and the Red Bull of Verstappen were involved in a collision early on in the race, when the Dutchman was attempting to overtake.

In the post-race press conference, Dutch journalist Louis Dekker asked Hamilton about his intentions behind the comment.

"Can I answer that?"

"At the moment he said that, he was still full of adrenaline", Verstappen, 20, told Het Laaste Nieuws.

"And through struggling to understand how we operate, communicate, we did lose the race".

"I am doing 34.3, is that enough?" a bewildered Hamilton replied, later adding, "Feels like you guys are not giving me much of a picture".

"It's interesting to hear that from Christian because they've got a vehicle that should be getting good results", Hamilton said.

"We've all been in that situation, we fight someone, we go sometimes wheel-to-wheel, it's close and you have a lot of adrenalin going".

"Ultimately, I had a coming together with Max and it was an unnecessary collision", said Hamilton. So we ended up touching. Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff defended his driver though by reasoning out that it was only a racing incident.

Hamilton managed to catch up in the third place, which was just behind his teammate Valtteri Bottas.

It was Vettel's 49th grand prix win and an unprecedented fourth at the Sakhir desert circuit.

Vertappen won two races last season, ending the season strongly.

For now, though, it is Vettel leading the race.

"I don't understand what I've got to do", Hamilton said on lap 43 when told to target a lap time of "low 34s", or 1 minute, 34 seconds.

"There needs to be a certain respect between drivers", the Brit said.

"It didn't feel that respectful".

"It was a silly move for him because he didn't finish the race and obviously he's tending to make quite a few mistakes recently". The Red Bull driver came out with a fresh set of supersoft tires, but then pulled up a lap later to make it a miserable evening for the Austrian team, who had already lost Ricciardo's auto to a technical fault.

During a pit stop on lap 36, Kimi Raikkonen was given the green light to drive away even though the left rear wheel had not been changed.

While Toro Rosso celebrated, Ferrari tempered theirs following an injury to one of their mechanics.
