"More and more, Uber is not just going to be just about taking a auto, but is about moving from point A to point B in the best way", Khosrowshahi told an event in the newly launched Uber driver center in the USA capital.

Khosrowshahi was in Washington, D.C.to discuss the company's commitment to expanding ride services in congested cities.

It's also a strategic move aimed at long-term survival.

The company announced it would make aggregated traffic data to help planners in 12 new cities worldwide under its Uber Movement plan, to bring the total to 21. Bike sharing is just the latest addition.

Jump won't appear in the traditional carousel of Uber options such as UberPOOL and UberX; Riders can access the Jump map by selecting the "Bike" option in Uber's menu.

Anyone with the Uber app in D.C. can now use it to rent a JUMP bike, the electric bikes that Uber now owns.

The expansion kicked off earlier this week after Uber announced that it had acquired bike-sharing startup Jump.

Uber also announced Wednesday that it will launch a test in San Francisco this month of a short-term vehicle rental program. MasterCard envisions a trip from say, CT to NY, using one in-app payment platform that covers the Uber ride, train ticket, and then subway access. Under the leadership of CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the company is well on its way to becoming a multi-modal transportation platform. Of course, a natural first step would be for the feature to work in cities that Masabi already has a partnership with. Its U.S. partnerships include New York MTA, Boston MBTA, LA Metrolink, and Las Vegas RTC.

These driver partners have also gone on strike on a number of occasions, complaining against reduced incentives and unfriendly policies.

Uber will expanding Uber Movement, a website the company launched previous year that offers anonymized and aggregated Uber data to show travel conditions across different times, days or months, and how travel times are impacted by things like big events and road closures in a city.

Uber Movement launched back in January 2017 and is now available in 21 cities worldwide, with Toronto being the first city in Canada to see data released.
