National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue and provides an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths, according to the DEA. According to recent studies, less than 25% of the people who start abusing prescription opioids obtained them from doctors.
The last such national "take back day", held in October, involved 5,321 collection sites across the country bringing in 456 tons of medication including 20,364 pounds from sites in MI, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency.
"Take-Back Day helps to keep drugs out of the hands of abusers and potentially save lives by removing unused painkillers and controlled drugs from homes", DEA Acting Administrator Robert W. Patterson said.
The Galion Police Department and Crawford County Sheriff's Office are participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
