First death from fresh Ebola outbreak confirmed in north west Congo

So far 17 people have died in an ebola outbreak in northwestern Congo.

There are two confirmed Ebola cases and 17 deaths that are suspected to have been caused by the virus, according to the heath ministry. Government experts will meet on Thursday to discuss measures to prevent the disease from crossing the border and spread to neighbouring countries.

"They will still continue surveillance so that if there are cases anywhere in the country we can quickly detect it and then treat it appropriately", he said.

It can be recalled that the Ebola outbreak of 2014 saw over 11,000 people killed.

Health Minister Oly Ilunga said seven people with the hemorrhagic fever were hospitalized in Bikoro as of Thursday.

There are now no clinical vaccine candidates available that protect against all four human-pathogenic Ebola viruses. The outbreak lasted just 42 days and global aid teams were praised for their prompt responses.

This outbreak started back in December, about 20 miles from the town of Bikoro, in the province of Equateur, north-west DR Congo.

Following an incubation period of between two and 21 days, Ebola develops into a high fever, weakness, intense muscle and joint pain, headaches and a sore throat. In addition to collecting samples from the population and taking care of "suspicious" cases, health professionals will disseminate prevention messages.
