- A Salmonella outbreak caused by contaminated eggs has made at least 35 people in nine states sick, worrying food safety experts and average grocery store customers alike as authorities scramble to implement a large recall for more than 207 million eggs.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday those infected with salmonella had reported feeling ill between November 16, 2017 and April 14. The outbreak has worsened in recent weeks, with the number of people getting sick because of the bacteria jumping to nearly three dozen.
The eggs went to stores and restaurants in New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. Illnesses have been reported in all of the states, the majority of which were from NY and Virginia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. voluntarily recalled 23,400 dozen eggs purchased from Rose Acre Farms.
Impacted brands include Country Daybreak, Coburn Farms, Crystal Farms, Sunshine Farms and Glenview. For Publix and Sunups egg cartons, people should check their cartoons for plant number P-1359D and Julian date 048A or 049A with best By dates of April 2 and April 3. In 1990, three separate outbreaks that sickened about 450 people in three states were traced back to Rose Acre Farms.

According to the CDC's bulletin, which was the first issued since April 16, 12 more people from five states were confirmed to have fallen ill since the last update. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
More than 500 million eggs from two Iowa farms owned and controlled by Austin J. DeCoster were recalled that year.
In February, Triple T Specialty Meats, based in Ackley, Iowa, recalled more than 20,000 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken salad products that may have been contaminated with salmonella.
