"John McCain's life is proof that some truths are timeless".

Veteran US senator and war hero John McCain - a towering figure in American politics for decades - has died at age 81 after losing his battle with brain cancer.

"I've known great passions, seen unbelievable wonders, fought in a war and helped make peace".

"I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times".

Cindy McCain, the senator's wife, wrote in a tweet, "I love my husband with all of my heart".

"My family is deeply appreciative of all the love and generosity you have shown us during this past year", said Meghan McCain, the senator's daughter.

Near the driveway to his ranch a sign read "Sen McCain, thank you for your service".

Mr McCain is expected to be remembered in Arizona and Washington before being buried, likely this week, at the Naval Academy Cemetery on a peninsula overlooking the Severn River. Dates for the events have not yet been announced.

Senator McCain was taken as a prisoner of war into the now-infamous "Hanoi Hilton", where he was denied needed medical treatment and subjected to years of torture by the North Vietnamese.

Early in his Senate career, McCain became embroiled in the "Keating Five" scandal. Consequently, he was a key vote for both sides of the aisle: in the past year alone, he helped Senate Republicans ensure their tax reform legislation passed the chamber and sank Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's health care proposal - which would have repealed much of Obamacare - by voting against it.

He first ran for president in 2000, becoming the main GOP challenger to George W. Bush, who went on to win the nomination and the White House.

Barack Obama, who beat Mr McCain in the 2008 presidential election, said the senator had shown what it meant "to put the greater good above our own".

During the heat of the 2016 United States presidential campaign, Donald Trump said that John McCain was "a war hero because he was captured".

Mr Bush was among those expected to speak at Mr McCain's funeral.

McCain "was a man of honor, a true patriot in the best sense of the word", wrote Democrat Jimmy Carter (1977-1981).

"I respect his military service", Palin continued.

A pilot, he was shot down over Vietnam and held as a prisoner of war for more than five years. Before joining the upper chamber, he served as a U.S. representative from 1983 to 1987.

According to McCain, his diagnosis of brain cancer in July 2017 left him free to "vote my conscience without worry", famously flying back to Washington against the advice of his doctors to vote against the effective repeal of the Affordable Care Act (aka "Obamacare") on July 25, spelling the end of a Republican promise.

Former Vice President Joe Biden joined the chorus of friends, family and supporters paying tribute to Ariz. Sen.

But John McCain was never afraid to reach across the aisle, so unafraid of straying from the party line that he earned the infamous Maverick nickname in the Senate.

Ducey said McCain was an American who will never be forgotten, and he was proud to call him a fellow Arizonan.

Other plans were taking shape, too. Sen.

Consequently, his death - and the seat that is now open - has the potential to reshape both the U.S. Senate and Arizona politics. Collins said McCain was struggling with his vote. Over the years, McCain advocated for military intervention in a number of countries including Bosnia, Kosovo, Georgia, North Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, and Mali.

Chinese social media users called him an "enemy of China" for his hawkish foreign policy views.
