Del Mar race course shooting - jockey flung from horse during chaos

Gun shots were fired Sunday afternoon near the Del Mar race track north of San Diego. When he did not cease his aggression after the tasing, the sheriffs opened fire and wounded the suspect, according to witnesses. The man who was shot was taken to the hospital by ambulance; his condition was not known.

As the field for the race pulled up past the finish, TVG host Todd Schrupp exclaimed, "There's gunfire at the track".

The concert, for which tickets were sold out, was scheduled to follow a full slate of horse races at the track, the station reported.

No further details were immediately available.

When sheriff's deputies responded to the confrontation, Elizarraras pulled out "a silver-plated semi-automatic handgun" and fired "several shots" into a crowd just outside the Del Mar Fairgrounds. In a TVG broadcast of the race that was posted on Twitter, an announcer can be heard repeatedly saying, "There's gunfire at the track", as horses continue along the turf course. Passing concert-goers can be heard shouting expletives after the shooting.

The incident at Del Mar Fairgrounds occurred at approximately 7pm (local time), just before the commencement of an Ice Cube concert following the raceday. "In light of the circumstances that unfolded involving one individual with a gun, we take consolation in the fact that no patrons, officers or security personnel were injured in the incident", the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club said in a statement.

At 7:22 p.m., Del Mar Racetrack tweeted that the incident had been contained and that the concert was taking place as planned.
