Dallas Police Officer Who Shot Botham Shem Jean Identified

A Dallas police officer who fatally shot a man she thought was inside her home when he was actually inside his own apartment has been arrested for manslaughter, records showed.

Police say the officer shot and killed 26-year-old Botham Jean after she returned home from her shift Thursday night and said she mistook his apartment for her own.

Dallas Police Chief Reneé Hall said a manslaughter warrant was filed on Friday, but it was temporarily held up as an investigation was initiated by the state police (the Texas Rangers).

The news of Guyger's arrest broke on the evening of September 9, 2018 after two days of confusion about whether Guyger, 30, would face charges in the weird shooting death of Botham Shem Jean, a Saint Lucian man who moved to America to attend a Christian college and later got a job in risk assessment for a prominent company in Dallas.

Police identified the officer as Amber Guyger, a four-year veteran of the department assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division.

According to the Texas Rangers, she was arrested in Kaufman County on Sunday after a warrant was issued for her arrest by the 7th District Court in Dallas County. She was expected to post a $300,000 bond and be released.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said Saturday that he had talked to Jean's family and to St. Lucia's prime minister to apologize for the young man's death.

"You want to think it's fiction. and you have to grapple with the reality", he said. Botham loved mankind. Botham never saw color, race.

Attorney Lee Merritt, who is representing Jean's family, also said that Jean did not know Guyger, according to family members. A struggle began and Ms Guyger fired her Taser at Perez, who then wrested it away from her.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

The officer, whose name has not been released, entered Botham Jean's apartment late Thursday thinking it was her apartment.
