Verizon 5G Home service coming to four cities from October 1

The company said Tuesday it would launch Verizon 5G Home October 1 with free installation, discounts for Verizon cellular customers, and the potential to deliver some stiff competition to cable companies.

U.S. cities of Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Sacramento and California will have the Verizon 5G network within the threshold of their home as promised by the telecom firm. After that, though, the cost goes up considerably: Verizon wireless customers with a qualifying phone plan will pay $50 a month while the service will run subscribers without Verizon Wireless $70 a month. Advertised prices include taxes and fees.

Verizon said its 5G Home customers will receive broadband speeds around 300 Mbps and peak speeds of almost 1 Gig, with no data caps. And best of all, there will be no data caps...

The company will begin signing up customers for its 5G broadband on Thursday, Sept. 13. The major difference with 5G is that it's much faster and can be used outside of mobile uses, such as home internet. Google also promises gigabit per second home internet speeds with Google Fiber, but Verizon's offering could appeal more to those who prefer to cut cords and cables out of their lives.

One other detail worth mentioning is that this is not Verizon's mobile 5G service that you'll use with smartphones, which is expected to launch in 2019. 5G networks also are seen as critical to ushering in an era of robotics and autonomous cars.

Verizon will offer free installation of routers and router upgrades that will support its 5G Home service.

The Wireless industry is an ever-changing world where big ideas come along daily. Since just recently those specifications were finalized, Verizon will not use them for its new home 5G, it will instead use a proprietary standard and just the Verizon equipment is able to send and or receive the signal.

In addition, the 5G Home internet subscribers will also get complimentary YouTube TV service for the first three months and thereafter at $40/month.
