Manchester United have dismissed reports Jose Mourinho will be sacked this weekend regardless of Saturday's result against Newcastle.

United are without a win in four matches in all competitions and when put to Mourinho that such a run was not acceptable for a club of this size, he said: "Yes, I accept (it is not good enough)".

Following Sky Sports" coverage of Brighton's win over West Ham, the Red Devils legend launched into a five-minute tirade against player-power, executives being in "Football Manager" mode and a "rotten to the core' situation at Old Trafford.

There are suggestions that senior United officials met with representatives of Mourinho in London on Friday to discuss the crisis, with the manager backed to turn around the club's fortunes after their worst start to a season in 29-years. This is not about me, this is about the football club they love.

"The ones that read the papers, that are connected with social media, they thought maybe I had gone", said Mourinho.

Jose Mourinho was under huge pressure before Manchester United's game with Newcastle United, never mind when they were 2-0 down, so it's no surprise he shouted with relief after the final whistle.

It was a performance of genuine heart, and one that reminded us Mourinho still has something to give.

Asked who was to blame for United's predicament, Mourinho responded: "The same people that were to blame for the fantastic season of last season".

Mourinho responded to the criticism coming his way by claiming United overachieved in finishing second last season, 19 points behind champions Manchester City, adding he always expected this campaign to be more hard.

As well as the rumours that he'd be sacked there has been plenty of criticism of the former Real Madrid boss and after the match he complained at the treatment he and the players had received saying, "It is the first time I see man-hunting". To be honest I'm furious. I'm not turning on my football club, but I have to say, something has to change; and it isn't the manager.

Where do you think Man United will finish this season?

After 10 minutes, that scenario looked all but certain, as United conceded a quickfire double to the Magpies, only for a Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial inspired Red Devils to complete the most memorable of comebacks in recent times to win the game 3-2. When you are in your own city, your own stadium, and you have 75 minutes minimum on the bus, I think that this is quite hard to accept.

That was time enough for him to reject suggestions his squad were struggling for confidence.
