Prominent protesters, including Amy Schumer and Emily Ratajkowski, were arrested with almost 300 others last week on Capitol Hill.

Pumping their fists and carrying signs, a few hundred people climbed the east steps of the Capitol for the demonstration.

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Brett Kavanaugh as an associate justice of the Supreme Court, putting a second nominee from President Donald Trump on the highest court in the land.

Acrimonious to the end, the battle featured a climactic roll call that was interrupted several times by protesters in the Senate Gallery before Capitol Police removed them.

Susan Collins several times ahead of her announcement Friday that she would support Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court - and he's been out of office for almost a decade.

Later he spoke to reporters aboard Air Force One, saying Mr Kavanaugh had withstood a "horrible attack by the Democrats" and that women were "outraged" at what had happened to the nominee.

Meanwhile, another woman, Deborah Ramirez who is married to a technology entrepreneur of Indian descent, Vikram Shah, alleged that while they were students at Yale, Kavanaugh had exposed his genitals in front of her at a party they had been drinking at.

The announcements by Republican Susan Collins of ME and Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia ended most of the suspense over a political battle that has transfixed the nation - though die-hard Democrats insisted on arguing through the night to a mostly empty Senate chamber.

"Judge Kavanaugh expressed a kind of raw tribal partisanship that we don't normally hear from judges, and if he were on the court no doubt those on the left would think he decided the way he did, at least in part, because of his Republican Party leanings".

Kavanaugh fought back hard, denying the accusations in angry and tearful testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee that was viewed live on television by around 20 million people.

The brutal hearing sparked a supplemental Federal Bureau of Investigation dive into Kavanaugh's background and a week-long delay of the Senate vote.

Mr Kavanaugh's appointment is for life and he will strengthen conservative control of the nine-judge court, which has the final say on USA law.

These included the emergence of two other accusers; an unforgettable Senate Judiciary Committee hearing at which a composed Ford and a seething Kavanaugh told their diametrically opposed stories, and a truncated FBI investigation that the agency said showed no corroborating evidence and Democrats lambasted as a White House-shackled farce. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, announced they, too, would support Kavanaugh.

After weeks of deliberation amid allegations of sexual misconduct during Kavanaugh's college years, the Maryland judge earned the important vote of Flake to pass through the Senate by a vote of 50-48. "[It's] a very sad day, I think, for [Murkowski]". Every voting Republican backed the 53-year-old conservative judge.

In a procedural vote that handed Republicans an initial victory, senators voted 51-49 Friday to limit debate and keep the nomination alive, defeating Democratic efforts to scuttle it with endless delays.

The confirmation means Trump has succeeded in having his two picks seated on the court - tilting it decidedly to the right in a major coup for the Republican leader less than halfway through his term. "Instead of a 6-3 liberal Supreme Court under Hillary Clinton, we now have a 5-4 conservative Supreme Court under President @realDonaldTrump, cementing a tremendous legacy for the President and a better future for America".

Collins said Saturday that crowdsourced funding targeting her was tantamount to "a bribe, or extortion".

"I used to think he was a pretty fearless guy".

The animosity toward Kavanaugh was felt throughout his confirmation hearings in late September, when Dr. Christine Blasey Ford testified that he had sexually assaulted her when the two were in high school.
