"The betting suggests Messi and Ronaldo's grip on the Ballon d'Or could be coming to an end this year as Luka Modric is odds-on to win the prize following his performances at the World Cup with Croatia and domestically for Real Madrid", said Coral's John Hill.

Modric, a World Cup runner-up with Croatia, beat Juventus' Ronaldo and Salah to win the Federation Internationale de Football Association prize last month after Messi was surprisingly left off the final three-man list.

The 33-year-old won the FIFA The Best award earlier in the year, pipping Ronaldo and Salah to the trophy. Messi has also won the award on five occasions.

De Bruyne was nominated for helping his club win the Premier League and his country reach the World Cup semi-finals.

For six years it combined with world football's governing body to become the FIFA Ballon d'Or.

Tottenham's Kane, 25, helped England reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russian Federation, while 29-year-old Bale scored twice for Real Madrid in the Champions League win over Liverpool.

The names are released in groups of five throughout the day, with the full 30-player shortlist eventually being drawn up ahead of the awards ceremony in Paris on 3 December.

Antoine Griezmann, a World Cup victor with France and Europa League champion at Atletico Madrid, is nominated alongside global teammates, Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante, Manchester United's Paul Pogba and PSG's Kylian Mbappe.

Liverpool's Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have been shortlisted for the 2018 Ballon d'Or.

For the first time, a Ballon d'Or for women players will be awarded this year, with the nominees to be announced later Monday.

France internationals Amandine Henry, Amel Majri and Wendie Renard are joined on the list by Germany's Dzsenifer Marozsan, England's Lucy Bronze, Ada Hegerberg of Norway and Japan defender Saki Kumagai.

Five-time victor Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Antoine Griezmann lead the shortlist for football's most prestigious individual prize, while Kylian Mbappe is the standout in the race for the new Kopa Trophy for young players.

However, FIFA ended its association with the award in September 2016.

The Ballon d'Or has been awarded by France Football every year since 1956, with former England global Sir Stanley Matthews the first victor.
