Jamal Khashoggi case: Saudis defy 'threats' over missing writer

Turkish authorities say a team of Saudis killed Khashoggi, and USA intelligence intercepts show Saudi officials discussing an operation to lure Khashoggi - a Saudi citizen who had been living in the United States - back to Saudi Arabia from his home in Virginia and detain him. "The Saudi economy has vital and influential roles for the global economy".

Khashoggi, a USA resident and Washington Post columnist critical of Saudi Arabia, disappeared on October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Citing anonymous sources, the Washington Post reported Friday that Turkey's government has told U.S. officials it has audio and video proof that Khashoggi was killed and dismembered.

Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 regarding documents for his planned marriage, but Turkish officials and his fiancee, who was waiting outside, said he never came out.

The threat caused the stock market of the world's biggest oil exporter to lose as much as $33 billion of its value on Sunday in one of the first signs of the economic pain that Riyadh could suffer over the affair.

Trump told reporters on Saturday at the White House that the USA would be "punishing itself" if it halted Saudi military sales, Reuters reported.

In protest of Khashoggi's disappearance, several US businesses leaders have pulled out of next week's Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, dubbed "Davos in the Desert", after the annual meeting of world economic interests in Switzerland.

Turkish authorities believe a 15-man hit squad flew into Istanbul, murdered Khashoggi and flew his dismembered body out of the country.
