Turkish police investigators have entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, almost two weeks after the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. CNN first reported that the Saudis were planning to admit Khashoggi died in the consulate.
Noticeably absent from discussions was the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, about whom Khashoggi wrote critically for the Washington Post and whose rise to power prompted the writer to go into a self-imposed exile in the US.
However, unconfirmed reports in the United States media suggest Saudi Arabia is preparing to admit that Mr Khashoggi died as a result of an interrogation that went wrong and that the original intention had been to abduct him.
