"I stand against any person or organization that peddles this type of unbridled hate and unapologetic bigotry", Kemp said in a statement.

Aubrey Shines commented on how Oprah Winfrey said that the ancestors of black Georgians would be proud of them for voting for Stacey Abrams.

"I am here today because Stacey Abrams cares about the things that matter", she said to a mostly female audience north of downtown Atlanta.

Kemp, who is Georgia's secretary of state, oversees the elections and denies he's made it harder for minorities to vote.

"Well, I think they would want them to vote, but not certainly not vote based on one's identity", Aubrey Shines said in a video message.

Noting that he heard Winfrey was in the Peach State, Pence said, "I got a message for all of Stacey Abrams' liberal Hollywood friends: this ain't Hollywood".

The ruling said allowing these people to vote was in the public's best interest.

Abrams, a graduate of Yale Law School, was the minority leader in the Georgia State House of Representatives and is in a closely fought race against Georgia GOP Secretary of State Brian Kemp to succeed Republican Gov. Nathan Deal.

The actress is set to hit the campaign trail for Abrams this week and gave a heartfelt speech at Thursday's event.

More than 1.5 million of the state's nearly seven million registered voters have cast ballots already.

Perhaps even more than President Barack Obama, who will campaign for Abrams on Friday, Winfrey's appeal closely aligns with Abrams' political pitch.

Abrams has been largely focused on turning out communities which don't usually turn out in high numbers during midterm elections, such as black voters and young people.

And someone out front was wearing a giant chicken suit holding a sign that reads "too chicken to debate", alluding to Kemp withdrawing from a debate scheduled Sunday in favor of appearing in Macon with President Donald Trump. She recalled generations of black Americans who faced "lynching. oppression. suppression", and declared that "their blood has seeped into my DNA" and forced her to the polls.

In a statement issued to the Washington Post, Kemp's spokeswoman, Candice L. Broce, called the ruling "a minor change to the current system".
