Donald Trump fires US Attorney General Jeff Sessions

Trump has long railed against Sessions, a former senator from Alabama who was an early and longtime supporter of his presidential campaign.

Mr. Trump announced in a tweet that he was naming Mr. Sessions' chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, a former US attorney from Iowa, as acting attorney general. Democrats worry that firing Sessions is a path to removing special counsel Robert Mueller and trying to end the probe.

A permanent replacement for Sessions must be confirmed by the US Senate, which Mr Trump's Republicans will continue to control as a result of the midterm elections. "If he doesn't, then Mueller's investigation will eventually start to look like a political fishing expedition".

Trump and Sessions had a falling out after the attorney general recused himself from Mueller's investigation.

He argued that "any investigation into President Trump's finances or the finances of his family would require Mueller to return to Rod Rosenstein for additional authority under Mueller's appointment as special counsel". Sessions had faced criticism from President Trump after he recused himself from the investigation into the possibility of collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

He is reported to have frequented the Oval Office in the last few years and have an "easy chemistry" with Trump, serving as a "balm" in the tenuous relationship between Trump and Sessions that has finally come to a close.

"Creating a constitutional crisis to change an Election Day narrative is a new low, even for Trump", Rep. Seth Moulton tweeted. Previously he was a conservative legal commentator who was critical of the scope of Mueller's probe.

"I don't have an attorney general".

During a fiery press conference, which saw Mr Trump brand a CNN reporter an "enemy of the people", on Thursday the president did not answer questions about the attorney general, saying he was "extremely" satisfied with his cabinet. I believe, just today, the president indicated that he might want the Democrats in Congress to be investigated, it sounded like for criminal purposes, by the Justice Department.

"I am committed to leading a fair Department with the highest ethical standards, that upholds the rule of law, and seeks justice for all Americans".

Sessions has been an adversary of Trump's since March 2017 when he rescued himself from the Russian Federation probe.
