The Democrat ran unchallenged in the general election after she unseated the incumbent, 10-term Rep. Michael Capuano, in a seemingly improbable upset that was all part of a larger "Blue wave" of Black women candidates winning primaries across the country.

At least 99 women will represent Americans in the House, surpassing the previous record of 84.

The vast majority of newly elected women are Democrats. Stefanik was previously the youngest person ever elected, as she was 30 when she won her first campaign in 2014.

Women were also elected governors in Iowa, Maine and South Dakota for the first time, as well as in the territory of Guam.

"Democratic women in particular and independent women, progressive women, upscale suburban women were clearly energised by the Trump victory and the Trump presidency in a negative way", said Democratic pollster Celinda Lake.

Republican women were animated by their own issues, including fears of borders being overrun and a backlash to the #MeToo movement. Democratic women flipped three Republican-held seats: Mary Lou Scanlon, Chrissy Houlahan, Susan Wild, and Madeleine Dean won an open seat. Democratic women won one Republican-held seat in IL, two in Iowa, and one in Kansas. Polis was also the first openly gay man elected to Congress in 2008. Davids defeated incumbent Republican Kevin Yoder.
