Phil Mickelson beats Tiger Woods on 22nd hole in $9m showdown

Phil Mickelson pays tribute to Tiger Woods after getting the better of his long-time rival in The Match, but the winning belt was a little too tight!

According to Golf Channel's "Tiger Tracker", an overhead skywriter wrote a series of questions that took shots at the pay-per-view match between the two golfers.

Mickelson won on the 22nd hole, making a 4-foot birdie putt on a specially set up 93-yard, par 3.

Despite driving the ball "like a stallion, " Mickelson said - Woods covered his eyes and chuckled - he could not take advantage of Woods' shaky start, holding a 1-up lead at the turn that could have easily been three or four holes. "We took a number of steps to resolve the matter with our main priority being to deliver the content to those who purchased the event".

The match was billed as a chance for viewers to watch an untraditional golf broadcast as both golfers and their caddies were mic'd up. There was some banter between Woods and Mickelson early on but not much as the stakes increased.

Woods also had to scramble for par after a wayward drive on the next before producing the first moment of quality of the day, a superb wedge from 107 yards setting up a conceded birdie which was matched by Mickelson.

Germany will look to youth after Nations League relegation - Joachim Low
The Germans needed just 9 minutes to open the scoring when Timo Werner's lovely strike found its way into the back of the net. Celtic cashed in on the player's move to Liverpool last January.

Woods understood and responded that they were going back to their old mode of "trying to beat each other's brains in".

Mickelson missed from 20 feet for a winning birdie on the first playing of the makeshift hole and from five feet the second time, but made no mistake from three feet at the third time of asking to finally seal victory. Woods, 1 down at the time and facing elimination, chipped in from the back of the green to tie the match up and send it to the 18th.

The truth is, Woods appeared rusty and far less motivated to play at his best in a match that Mickelson made no secret about wanting to win.

Mickelson also said it was like old times for him against Woods after that trademark shot.

"I know big picture, your career is the greatest of all time", Mickelson, who has 43 career victories and five majors, said of Woods. I wanna see Tiger and Phil throw down a challenge bet at him. But Mickelson won three side bets totaling $600,000 by hitting shots closer to the pin at the fifth, eighth and 13th holes. Woods was only here for a practice round Tuesday, then joined his family in Palm Springs, California, for Thanksgiving and then returned Friday morning. His attempt from 32 feet again fell left, and Woods was able to convert his birdie putt to force the first extra hole.

Those side bets were to be paid to the respective players' charitable foundations with the players' own funds. Woods's last major was in 2008; Mickelson's was in 2013.
