"In one sense, Trump is saying "I will turn a blind eye", Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in an interview with CNN Turk broadcaster, referring to Trump's continued support for Saudi Arabia, which has committed to billions of dollars in USA weapons contracts.

"This is not the right approach".

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday glossed over the CIA's reported conclusion that the crown prince had authorised the killing, saying Washington would not slacken its support for the kingdom.

"Maybe he did and maybe he didn't!"

Gina Haspel, the Central Intelligence Agency director, is said to have revealed the existence of a wiretapped call between Prince Mohammed and his brother - Khaled bin Salman, the ambassador to the United States - to Turkish officials, Turkey's Hurriyet news website said.

The Saudi Royal Court's statement said that the crown prince's visits also came in response to invitations from heads of states of the Arab countries on his itinerary.

The 59-year-old had gone there for documents he needed to marry his Turkish fiancee.

Legitimate as that question may be, it understates the degree to which experts are concerned about Saudi Arabia's plans for a massive nuclear power program, and the prospect it might be used as a front for the creation of a Saudi Bomb.

In the meantime, world leaders from all over condemned the brutal murder of the Washington Post columnist, who held US residency.

The killing and Riyadh's explanations have angered its Western partners.

Mueller could theoretically still look to subpoena the president if he feels the answers are not satisfactory. The Supreme Court has never ruled on whether a president can be subpoenaed to testify in a criminal case.

"Maybe he did and maybe he didn't", he said, adding that the Saudis were "a great ally".

The letter takes on added significance with Germany this week imposing an arms embargo on Saudi Arabia and the US Congress potentially adopting similar measures.

But Denmark on Thursday followed suit, freezing all sales of weapons and military equipment to Riyadh.

The letter goes to the heart of debate in Washington that beyond issues of values is about the importance of the US-Saudi relationship. "We will certainly want to examine what the intelligence community knows about the murder".

Turkey insists the murder was premeditated, sharing evidence with Riyadh as well as with the U.S. and Western allies but stops short of pointing the finger of blame at the prince.

The crown prince has requested to meet Mr Erdogan on the sidelines of the upcoming G20 summit in Argentina, Mr Cavusoglu said.

"There could be" a meeting, Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said.

Erdogan and the crown prince spoke for the first time on the phone on Oct 24 about the case, discussing the joint efforts needed to shed light on the murder.

Seeking to rally support from Arab allies ahead of the summit, Prince Mohammed on Thursday embarked on a regional tour starting with the United Arab Emirates, his first official trip overseas since Khashoggi's murder tipped the kingdom into crisis.

The prince is also set to travel to the Tunisian capital on Tuesday, a presidential source in Tunis told AFP.
