Putin briefs Trump over Ukraine as European Union leaders up pressure

Russian President Vladimir Putin told his American colleague Donald Trump about the incident with the Ukrainian ships in the Kerch Strait.

But ahead of the summit's official start Mr Trump signed a trade deal with the Mexican and Canadian leaders.

Kiev's pleas for help had also apparently fallen on deaf ears as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation provided a tight-lipped response, with the spokeswoman Oana Lungescu saying the bloc already has a sizeable naval presence in the Black Sea.

The November 25 incident was the first direct military confrontation between the two countries since Russian Federation annexed Crimea in 2014. Thus, according to the Ukrainian side, Russian Federation has once again demonstrated its aggressive nature and complete disregard for the norms of global law.

"In the waters of the Black Sea, Sea of Azov, and Aegean Sea, more than 80 ships and 8 submarines are on patrol - including 23 combat vessels and 6 submarines", he declared.

Border guards' spokesman Andrei Demchenko has told Ukrainian television Saturday that "the vast majority of (them) couldn't confirm the goal of their trip to Ukraine".
