Half of HIV positive people face discrimination

- About 35 million people have died from AIDS- or HIV-related illnesses since 1981, including 940,000 in 2017. AIDS remains the leading cause of death in women aged 15 to 44, and the second-largest mortality factor for teenagers worldwide. The star-studded gala at Guastavinos in NY recognized the foundations 20 years of campaigning around HIV and sexual/reproductive health and rights, and raised more than $570,000 toward the global fight to end HIV. We must not just focus our efforts on reaching zero transmissions, but also zero stigma.

"New York State has made tremendous progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and this new data demonstrates we're on track to achieve our goal of ending the epidemic by 2020", Governor Cuomo said.

"In all this, we need the political will; we need the investment from governments, partners and private sectors, and most of all we need the communities to promote demand for HIV testing services".

The agency's also reminding people ME that HIV care and prevention have dramatically changed since the discovery of the virus in 1984, and many patients are able to live long lives.
