On Monday, his son George W. Bush - who became the 43rd President in 2001 - shared a photo on Instagram of Sully lying next to the casket of his late friend.

President Donald Trump and George P. Bush's father, Jeb, engaged in a vitriolic primary rivalry during the 2016 campaign, and Trump has mocked and criticized the legacies of both Presidents Bush.

Trained to assist U.S. army veterans as part of the VetDogs programme, Sully was joined by several army veterans - some of who were in wheelchairs from injuries incurred during their time in action - and one of the late president's sons, Neil Bush. Bush, who reportedly invited Trump to his funeral last summer, would not have wanted "anyone there to feel uncomfortable, including the incumbent president", one person said. In their row together, President Donald Trump and former Presidents Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton stood with their spouses and all placed their hands over their hearts.

At the end of his life, Sully the service dog was President George H.W. Bush's.

On Wednesday morning, a military band played "Hail to the Chief" as Bush's casket was carried down the steps of the U.S. Capitol, where he had lain in state.

But late Monday, after Bush relatives and dignitaries had gone, the president was driven from the White House up to Capitol Hill.

Bush, 94, died Friday.

Trump in MS to Rally for Hyde-Smith
Before he left Washington on Monday, Trump said he had spoken with Hyde-Smith about the remark. "We are all very proud of you!" Bryant commented earlier on Hyde-Smith's remarks by saying that the real issue was how abortion was creating a Black genocide.

Along with Sully, people across the US are now mourning the 41st US President - Bush served one term from 1989 until 1993 and oversaw the country through the fall of the Soviet Union and the Gulf War.

"We'll be spending three days of mourning and three days of celebrating a really great man's life", Trump said in Argentina where he was attending the G20 summit.

Some of the agents will also act as honorary pallbearers in Texas at the funeral home and Ellington Field, where Bush will begin his final flight back to Washington, DC. An invitation-only funeral service will follow at Washington National Cathedral before his casket returns to Houston for burial.

On Thursday, Bush will be interred at the George HW Bush Presidential Library Center in College Station, Texas, next to his wife Barbara, who died in April, and their daughter Robin who died of leukaemia at age three.

Bush was elected president in 1988 after serving two terms as President Ronald Reagan's vice president.

Sully is 2 years old.

Mourners lined up to enter the Capitol beginning Monday evening for the public viewing. The pair worked together to raise tens of millions of dollars for victims of a 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and of Hurricane Katrina, which swamped New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in 2005.
