US warplanes crash off Japan; 1 rescued, 6 missing


The US military has also experienced difficulties with its Osprey helicopters, with several emergency landings, a deadly crash and a piece of the chopper falling on the grounds of a Japanese school.

Two United States Marine aircraft are reported to have crashed off the coast of Japan today. Search and rescue operations were underway at the scene.

Officials who spoke on condition of anonymity were unsure how the mishap may have occurred but none suspected foul play.

"We are thankful for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's efforts as they immediately responded in the search and rescue operation", the Marines said.

U.S. Marines and Japanese authorities were searching early Thursday off the coast of Japan for missing Marines after a mishap between a fighter jet and plane used both for transporting troops and refueling, Marine officials said.

The planes involved are a KC-130 and an F/A-18 based at Iwakuni near Hiroshima and were carrying seven personnel, Marines officials said.

The crash is the latest in recent series of accidents involving the US military deployed to and near Japan.

And in mid-October, an MH-60 Seahawk belonging to the same carrier crashed off the Philippine Sea after takeoff.
