Indian-origin police officer ‘working overtime on Christmas’ shot dead in California

Authorities say the gunman shot and killed a police officer during a traffic stop in the small California town of Newman about 100 miles (160 kilometers) southeast of San Francisco. Multiple agencies responded, finding Singh alive but suffering from several gunshot wounds.

Authorities released photographs of the suspect and the truck that were taken by surveillance cameras at a convenience store moments before the traffic stop.

He should be considered armed and unsafe, CHP said.

The suspect is described as a heavy-set Hispanic male with black hair. He was last seen wearing a black jacket with white Ecko brand patches on the shoulder, black shirt, a silver chain necklace, blue jeans and black shoes.

Newman detectives asked anyone with information about the man's identity to contact them.

In a community with only 13 sworn officers in the police department and roughly 11,000 residents, a tragedy like this hits everyone hard.
