As outage affecting 911 calls continues, FCC launches an investigation

The outage hit 911 service across the country, according to the Federal Communications Commission, which announced Friday that it's launching an investigation.

Verizon said it had service interruptions in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and parts of Montana as a result of issues with CenturyLink.

Lewis County, along with numerous counties across the state, suffered from a 911 outage Thursday evening into the early morning hours Friday due to a CenturyLink glitch.

So far, Missouri, Idaho, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, parts of Montana, and MA have seen some sort of impact.

It also noted that text-to-911 services were unaffected by the outages.

On Friday morning, the Louisiana-based company tweeted that it was continuing to experience disruptions.

"#SLC government is now experiencing issues with our phone and internet services related to a nationwide problem".

A Nationwide outage reaching from NY to California has been causing headaches since early Thursday morning.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai called the outage "completely unacceptable, and its breadth and duration are particularly troubling", in a statement Friday.

In Arizona, some police agencies said 911 systems crashed temporarily or had intermittent problems. "I've directed the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau to immediately launch an investigation into the cause and impact of this outage", he continued.

If you can not locate your police station's emergency phone number, call the State 911 Department at 508-872-2508, tell the dispatcher the exact location of the emergency and the dispatcher will transfer you to the correct police department.

CenturyLink didn't provide details of the problem and it didn't indicate how many customers were affected.

"We continue to make good progress with our recovery efforts and we are working tirelessly until restoration is complete", CenturyLink said.
