Weezer Bus Crash Brings Tour to a Screeching Halt

Weezer’s Webmaster, Karl Koch, posted pictures on the bands official website this morning and gave a detailed account of a bus crash that occurred in the pre-dawn hours and has caused the cancellation of the groups December 2009 dates on their “Ratitude” Tour. Injured in the wreck were lead singer/guitarist Rivers Cuomo and his wife’s Assistant, Sarah. Cuomo’s wife and infant daughter were on the bus, but thankfully did not sustain any injuries.
The accident occurred 40 miles West of Albany, New York. The bus hit a patch of black ice and skidded out of control, leveling a guardrail and dropping down a ten-foot embankment. According to Koch, “Rivers was tossed around violently, waking up as he landed back on his mattress. He does not recall hitting anything, but he must have, as he cracked three ribs, sustained some mostly minor but painful internal damage, and hurt his lower leg somehow. Sarah was pitched out of her upper level bunk onto the floor five feet below and sustained two fractured ribs and as well as a fractured lower vertebrae.”

The rest of the band were traveling about 20 minutes behind the crash, and rolled up to a very scary scene indeed. Firefighters were attempting to enter the bus using “Jaws of Life” and Koch could see Rivers through the window sprawled on the ground, incapacitated and shivering. The inside of the bus was chaotic with personal items scattered all about. Rivers and Sarah were transported by ambulance to a local hospital in Amsterdam, New York (approximately 10 miles from the scene of the accident).
Sarah was discharged, but a 3-4 week recuperation time is anticipated for her injuries. Rivers was transported to a larger area hospital where he remains under observation, and surgery is not anticipated at this time.
Koch officially announced, “We are sorry to say that the rest of the December Raditude Tour has been canceled – when we can reschedule the dates we will, of course. I have no ticket or refund or whatever info. at this time, but stay tuned to this site http://www.weezer.com for more information. For now it’s a waiting game for us all. Thanks for your kind thoughts and good wishes. We need them!”
Koch’s full statement can be read on “Karls Corner” section of the Weezer Website.
