Band to Watch 2010: Seven Story Fall
December 23, 2009 · Print This Article
Seven Story Fall, who are arguably the future favorite sons of the Atlanta music scene, are known for their energetic stage presence, powerful melodies, and super fast riffs. The boys from metro Atlanta once again brought down the house at the Masquerade in front of 500 plus people for their final homecoming show of 2009. After the show, I sat down with Ryan McManus, Mike Hart, Justin Calalay, and TJ Routon for a one-of-a-kind interview. I say this because Mike started off the interview in a most unusual way…by interviewing me!
MH: This is Seven Story Fall interviewing Austin King…What is your favorite color?
TST: Red…no doubt in my mind.
MH: Well, I already like where this is going!
TST: So you guys have an acoustic EP coming out two days before Christmas to round out 2009, but what’s in store for 2010?
MH: Man, 2009 was a great year for us. It was nothing but growth for the band. We can’t wait to see how 2010 works out. We’re going to be putting out a bunch of new music.
RM: Yeah, we’re releasing some new music in early 2010. It’s going to be sick!
TST: When you guys were kids, what did you guys want to be when you grew up besides musicians, of course?
TJ: Astronaut
MH: I would have loved to be an architect…or a cowboy.
JC: Man, I wanted to be the Green Power Ranger so bad!
MH: Yo, real talk – That guy killed a bunch of people a few years back! He tied like three people to an anchor and threw them off his yacht. So yeah – you grow up to be a Power Ranger, Justin…see what happens.
TST: What was it like transitioning from a high school band just playing small venues around the area to breaking out and playing the whole Southeast on this last tour?
RM: It’s really awesome. People take you a lot more seriously about what you do. And for us as a band it has become more like our job instead of something fun to do on the weekends with jam sessions and stuff.
JC: I totally just zoned out! You can put that on the record. I don’t need to sound smart (laughs). But yeah, it feels wonderful. I love what I do.
TST: So do any of you guys have any plans of taking a break for college or anything?
RM: We have one plan: to continue this until it can’t go on. We have no other options or back-up plans. This is what we do. We put all our eggs in this basket and we’re going to do make music until we can’t do it anymore.
JC: The only thing I want to learn how to do on our off time is learn how to fly planes! I could fly our private jet, so then we wouldn’t have to spend anymore money that we don’t have. It’s kinda like shopping at Target & Walmart for groceries – you save money!
TST: How far is the raw ambition that you guys obviously have going to take you as a band in 2010 and beyond?
MH: Man, it’s going to DOUBLE from what it was in 2009!
RM: Seven Story Fall is going to be a much more household name! Not just in Atlanta, but hopefully all over the country by the end of next year. Our marketing plans and overall strategy is going to be carrying us a long way. And beyond this upcoming year- we are very confident in what we do. I feel that the five of us can do whatever we want to, so we’d be lying ourselves and I’d be lying to you if I didn’t say that we are going to be the biggest band that we can possibly be.
TST: Is the music going to evolve as a band in 2010?
MH: It’s definitely more poppier and catchier, but it’s still got some major nuts to it!
TJ: It’s going to be a lot more mainstream, but it’s the kind of mainstream where we stay true to ourselves and to our music. But at the same time, hopefully everyone is going to have a different Seven Story Fall song stuck in their heads.
JC: And packing out arenas!
When a band with an average age of 18 is already headlining a cross-country tour and fighting off hordes of beautiful girls to get back to the van, there is no other option but to grow exponentially. I have to agree with the boys from Hotlanta – Seven Story Fall will without a doubt be a household name while they take the country by storm. I know I’m not the only one with an eye on this “Band to Watch for 2010″ as they make the huge step from baby band to superstars.
