You Need More Reasons To Visit Athens?
June 17, 2010
School is out and the Bulldogs won’t take the field at Sanford Stadium until September. If great restaurants, coffee shops and indie record stores are not enough to get you to Athens this summer than maybe Athfest can convince you. The Modern Skirts, Perpetual Groove, Bubba Sparxxx, Cracker, Packway Handle Band and Kinchafoonee Cowboys headline this summer festival that will fill the streets, bars and venues of Athens.
This year Athfest spans five days (June 23-27) and will focus on in-town local music, art and film while bringing some acts from neighboring counties and a few from out of state. For three decades, Athens has been fertile soil for up-and-coming musical acts and this festival will shine a bright light on these talented artists.
The film festival will feature a number of documentaries concerning local music, including two about local singer/songwriter and all around music hero, Vic Chestnutt, who died December of last year. The film portion will also include feature length and short film submissions from local directors.
An open-air artist market will round out the festival from Friday, June 25 til Sunday, June 27. 40 artist booths with everything you need to spice up your dorm room or add to your local artist collection.
Visit Athfest’s official site to purchase tickets and get all the details on the local artists, bands, and films you won’t want to miss. Also, Athfest, Inc. is a non-profit dedicated to music and arts education so you can feel good about this one all the way around.
