In news that rocked the social media world Zayn Malik, one-fifth of the band One Direction, quit Twitter after receiving repeated hate tweets.

Before completely deactivating his account, Malik explained his reasoning via the micro-blogging site: “The reason i don’t tweet as much as i use to, is because I’m sick of all the useless opinions and hate that I get daily.” After signing off with a “goodbye twitter” status, Malik deleted his account for good.

Malik joines John Mayer, Miley Cyrus, Alec Baldwin and Amanda Bynes, all of whom at one point quit the social media site. Mayer is the only aforementioned celebrity not to reactivate his account.

The other four members of One Direction–Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson–still have their own personal Twitter accounts.

Taylor Swift Earns First Billboard #1 With ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ Thu, 23 Aug 2012 14:34:34 +0000 Brittanyt

Believe it or not, Taylor Swift has never had a number one hit. Despite three chart-topping albums and a handful of multi-platinum singles, Swift never had a number one single prior to “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” “You Belong With Me” and “Today Was A Fairytale” , her highest charting singles, both peaked at number 2.

“Never Ever” sold 623,000 downloads in its first week, breaking the record for the best-selling single by a female artist set by Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok”  (610,000) in January 2010. “Never Ever” also topped Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” the previous record holder for best first week sales by a female artist. That song sold 448,000 downloads.

Swift took to Twitter to celebrate her accomplishment. “# 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100!!?! This has been the most amazing week. I can’t believe how incredible you guys are. (Jumping up and down)”

“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” garnered its fair share of criticism. Many critics accused the song of being too juvenile for Swift whose previous album Speak Now foreshadowed her budding songwriting talent.

“Never Ever” is the first song from Swift’s fourth studio album Red which hits stores October 22nd.

Avril Lavgine and Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger Engaged Thu, 23 Aug 2012 14:06:48 +0000 Brittanyt

He was a boy, she was a girl, can I make it anymore obvious?

Well, apparently you can. Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne, 27, flashed her 14 carat diamond engagement ring on the front cover of Hello Canada magazine with fiance’ Nickleback frontman Chad Kroeger, 37.

The two met in February of this year while collaborating on Lavigne’s upcoming fifth studio album. Lavigne was previously married to Sum 41′s Deryck Whibley from 2006-2009. The couple’s divorce was finalized in 2010. This is Kroeger’s first marriage.

Lavigne previously dated reality star Brody Jenner for two years, but that relationship fizzled out earlier this year. The pop star was also briefly linked to Marilyn Manson before she started dating Kroeger.

Nicki Minaj cancels concert: Is ‘American Idol’ in the wings? Mon, 20 Aug 2012 15:58:46 +0000 Brittanyt

Speculation on who will fill the seat vacated by Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler on the next season of American Idol has reached a fever pitch. Mariah Carey recently signed a one year deal, taking over for fellow pop diva Jennifer Lopez. With auditions on the horizon, Fox executives are scrambling to find Tyler’s replacement.

Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers threw his hat in the ring, announcing on Twitter that he was in consideration for the spot. Now reports are saying that Fox is eyeing a four person panel that would include Carey, Minaj, a country star and a Latin heart-throb.

Indeed, Minaj appears to be the top choice for the gig. The rapper recently had to cancel a gig for strained vocal chords. Minaj previously tweeted that she had to start her fall tour later than usual, noting that her fans “will be very happy” when they find out why.

However, Idol’s partnership with Coke might thwart their plans to secure a contract with Minaj, who is the current face of Pepsi.

Russian Activists Sue Madonna for Supporting Gay Rights Mon, 20 Aug 2012 15:39:22 +0000 Brittanyt

Poor Madonna. Life hasn’t been easy for the “Material Girl” singer. First Elton John called her a “stripper” and now Russian activists are suing Madge for promoting gay rights in her St. Petersburg concert.

Madonna broke a law that was passed earlier this year in St. Petersburg which prohibits the promotion of homosexuality of minors. Children as young as 12 were in attendance at Madonna’s August 9th concert.

According to Alexander Pochuyuev, the nine activists are seeking 333 million rubies or $10.5 million in damages.

Ryan Murphy Tweets New ‘Glee’ Promo Thu, 16 Aug 2012 14:00:25 +0000 Brittanyt

Glee show runner Ryan Murphy, in what’s becoming a common practice, tweeted the first Season 4 promo for the beloved Fox dramedy. “So exciting…Season Four, here we come!”

The clip, entitled “Time,” features a first glimpse of Kate Hudson as Rachel Berry’s (Lea Michele) hard-nosed NYADA instructor Cassandra July. After some quick Season 3 shots and a particularly sad scene of the New Direction’s six remaining members (down significantly from last season’s 16) in the choir room, is a juicy scene between Hudson and Michele.

Hudson: “I bet you were a big star in Iowa.” Michele: “Actually, I’m from Ohio.” Hudson: “Ohio! Even worse”

The rest of the clip features standard slushie shots as well as Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) singing Imagine Dragon’s “It’s Time.” Though the faces are the same, there is a sense of change coming to the show.

Glee returns for its fourth season Sept 13 at 9pm on Fox.

Music’s Biggest Artists Produce Anthems for Favorite NFL Teams Thu, 16 Aug 2012 13:31:51 +0000 Brittanyt

In an effort to promote their partnership and America’s favorite pastime, Pepsi and the National Football League have commissioned four of music’s most popular artists to write anthem’s for their hometown teams.

Kelly Clarkson, Gym Class Heroes front man Travie McCoy, Ice Cube and Kid Rock  contributed tracks celebrating their favorite teams (the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Giants, Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions respectively.)

Clarkson’s lone star anthem “Get Up,” was the first to be released and the tune is extremely catchy even if you loath the Texas-based team (and this is coming from a fan of the G-Men.)

“It’s a really cool thing, and I’ve never done anything like this in my career. What a cool way to reach another audience. I can’t wait to hear it in the stadium.”

McCoy’s New York Giant’s song “All In” will only be available through Pepsi redemption codes. The song will become available for free download starting September 3rd, just two days before the G-Men’s match up against Clarkson’s favorite star-clad footballers.

Kid Rock’s “In Detroit” and Ice Cube’s Untitled Raiders song will be released in due time. A remix version of Wiz Khalifa’s Pittsburgh Steeler’s anthem “Black & Gold” will be made available through this new campaign.

Taylor Swift’s New Album ‘Red’ Hits Stores October 22; New Single ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ Thu, 16 Aug 2012 13:05:18 +0000 Brittanyt

Taylor Swift, 22, promised fans “cool news” last week when she announced her August 13th webcast and she did not disappoint. The popular country cross-over artist released the artwork, title and release date of her fourth studio album Red.  The disc, which drops October 22nd, features a whopping 16 songs including a duet with Ed Sheeran.

Swift used the web chat to give fans an insight into the album’s title. “[The songs are] all pretty much about the kind of tumultuous, crazy, insane, intense, semi-toxic relationships that I’ve experienced in the last two years. All those emotions spanning from intense love, intense frustration, jealousy, confusion, all of that, in my mind all those emotions are red. There’s nothing in between. There’s nothing beige about any of those feelings.”

Unlike Swift’s previous multi-platinum smash Speak Now, which the singer wrote all on her own, Red features collaborations with a number of writers and artists including Mark Foster of Foster the People, Dan Wilson, Butch Walker, Lori McKenna, Max Martin and Johan Shellback. In fact, it was the latter two that penned Swift’s catchy new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

Swift humorously labeled the track as “a really romantic song that’s to my lovely ex-boyfriend.” In an interview with ABC, Swift revealed that it was a run in with a friend of her ex’s while in the studio that inspired her, Martin and Shellback to write the song. “He starts talking about how he’s heard we were getting back together and that was not the case. When he leaves, Max and Johan are like, ‘so what’s the story behind that?’ And so I start telling them the story of break up, get back together, break up, get back together, just, ugh, the worst.”

“Max says, ‘this is what we’re writing. We’re writing this song,’ and I picked up the guitar and just started singing, ‘we are never–. It just happened so fast. It was so much fun.”

Swift also revealed that a tour is in the works, details of which will be announced in the coming months.

“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” hasn’t been out for a week yet and it already become the fastest selling digital single in history, topping the record set by Lady Gaga’s anthem “Born This Way.”

Even in death, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch will not sell out Mon, 13 Aug 2012 16:30:51 +0000 Brittanyt

Most artists jump at the change to use their material in commercial advertising. Look at Train. The band reaped a big pay day when their hits “Hey Soul Sister” and “Drive By” were used in national television ads. Commercial advertising not only provides the artist with a tremendous payday, but also exposes their material to a  whole new audience.

Late Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch however, did not agree. During the rap group’s successful career, Yauch made it clear in songs like “Putting Shame In Your Game” and “Triple Trouble” that he would not allow any of his material to appear in television commercials.

Yauch, who died in May at the age of 47, made his feelings clear in his will. “In no event may my image or name or any music or any artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes.”

Dechen Wangdu Yauch, Yauch’s widow and Beastie Boy bandmates Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz sued the Monster energy drink company after an ad featuring a 23 minute medley of Beastie Boys music appeared online.

It will be interesting to see whether the suit is successful and if Yauch’s wishes or upheld.

Taylor Swift Has Special Announcement for Fans August 13th Thu, 09 Aug 2012 20:42:02 +0000 Brittanyt

Nothing about country superstar Taylor Swift is subtle. Instead of ambiguous nods to former lovers in her music, Swift calls out the men by name, leading to a whole slew of publicity and sympathy for the Pennsylvania native.

Yesterday, Miss. Swift posted a 29 second video on her YouTube page in which she teased fans with the news of a special announcement on August 13th. Swift with be holding a live webcast that day starting at 7 PM (4 PM Pacific).

The “cool news” that Swift refers to in the above clip most likely has to due with her music. After all, America’s sweetheart has been hard at work on her fourth album which she describes as “sad.”

Unlike Speak Now, which Swift wrote by herself, the singer will collaborate with other producers and writers.

“I made my last album, Speak Now, with this idea I really wanted to make an album without writing with anyone else just because I always wanted to do that. And now I have a different approach to this record. I’m getting to work with people that I’ve always wanted to work with.”

“I’m trying to be as much of a sponge as possible. You have to evolve and try new things and change and that’s what I’ve loved to do with this album.”

Swift tested new material earlier this year when she contributed two songs, “Eyes Open” and “Safe and Sound”  to The Hunger Games soundtrack. The latter track is collaboration with The Civil Wars and sounds extremely different from the brighter songs that comprise her three albums.

However, Swift’s new relationship with Robert Kennedy Jr’s 18 year old son Conor Kennedy, will likely provide fodder for love songs.

“I think that love is always going to be a huge theme in what I write about just because there are no two similar relationships, there are no two times that you feel love the same way or hurt the same way or [feel] rejection [in] the same way. It’s all different and I’m fascinated by that,” she said. “I really love to go back to human interaction and the way we make each other feel. But that at 22 is different than it was at 18 or 19 when I made my last album and 16 and 17 when I made Fearless. As you grow, you change in the way you process emotion.”

Carly Rae Jepsen Blowing a ‘Kiss’ to fans in September Thu, 09 Aug 2012 19:57:44 +0000 Brittanyt

Carly Rae Jepsen may have dominated the summer airwaves with “Call Me Maybe,” but the former Canadian Idol contestant hasn’t released a full length album since 2008′s Tug of War. “Call Me Maybe” was the lead single off her EP Curiosity, which dropped Valentine’s Day of this year but aside from that six-track album, Jepsen has yet to release new material. That will change with the September 18th release of her sophomore album Kiss.

In a statement for Kiss, Jepsen described the album as pop record and said it was “inspired by Robyn, The Cars, Madonna, and believe it or not, James Taylor.”

With the release of Kiss more than a month of way, many people wonder whether Jepsen can top the success of “Call Me Maybe.” The song, has been a staple on the Billboard Hot 100 and has spawned a number of parodies. Jepsen, however, does not seem daunted by the challenge. She recruited hit producer Max Martin as well as Josh Ramsey, Dallas Austen and Toby Gad to pen material for the album.

Elton John Refers to Madonna as a ‘Fairground Stripper’ Mon, 06 Aug 2012 16:55:20 +0000 Brittanyt

Well, Elton John and Madonna are two pop stars that won’t be on each other’s Christmas card list this year.

In an interview with Australia’s Channel 7, John reignited his long-standing feud with the Material Girl by unleashing a series of harsh insults apparently sparked by Madonna’s mistreatment of John’s friend Lady Gaga, who is the godmother to his son Zachary.

“Why is she such a nightmare? Her career is over, I can tell you that. Her tour has been a disaster and it couldn’t happen to a bigger [expletive].”

John continued on his tirade, even praising Madge for her past body of work. “If Madonna had any common sense, she would have made a record like Ray of Light, stayed away from the dance stuff, and just been a great pop singer and made great pop records, which she does brilliantly.”

He also referred to the pop singer as a “fairground stripper.”

Madonna’s MDNA tour has come under fire recently for her crazy onstage antics including flashing her nipple in Istanbul and projecting an image of a swastika over the head of National Front political leader Marine Le Pen in a video at her concert in France.

Nick Jonas to be newest ‘American Idol’ judge? Mon, 06 Aug 2012 16:16:30 +0000 Brittanyt

Figuring out who will be the next judge hired for the mother of all singing competitions, American Idol, has transformed into a media circus. Even before Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler formally resigned their posts, the media was abuzz with reports that Idol executives were searching for new judges. Adam Lambert, a former Idol contestant, was among the celebrities named to fill one of the vacant judge chairs.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Mariah Carey had signed a one year deal to take over for Lopez. Now the search is on to find another judge. Pop musician Nick Jonas, 19, announced yesterday via Twitter that he was in the running for the job. “The rumors are true… I am being considered to be a judge on American Idol, and it would be a dream come true if it happens. #nickonidol”

Jonas recently completely a stint on Broadway in the revival of How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Previous proprietors of the role were Glee star Darren Criss and Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe. Jonas is currently in the midst of recording a fifth Jonas Brothers album with his brothers and band mates Joe and Kevin.

If Jonas was hired, he would be Idol’s youngest judge. Fox pulled a similar stunt earlier in the year when they hired Britney Spears and Demi Lovato to replace Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger on The X-Factor panel. Pharrell and Snoop Lion (formerly Snoop Dog) have also expressed interest in Idol.

Nick’s older brother Joe was a guest judge on Idol in 2010.

Glee co-creator and show runner Ryan Murphy created a Twitter account yesterday and treated the show’s rabid fans to a deleted scene that featured Blaine (Darren Criss) and Kurt (Chris Colfer) exchanging Christmas gifts in a hallway at McKinley High.

The previously unreleased scene was supposed to be shown in the show’s third season but was cut by Fox at the last minute. Fans were angry and demanded that the scene appear on the Season 3 box set. Thanks to Murphy however, fans will not have to wait long to see view the long awaited scene.

The appearance of the deleted scene is not the only new Glee news to hit the web. Two fresh faces, Melissa Benoist and Becca Tobin, have been cast to fill the now half-empty McKinley High choir room alongside the previously announced Dean Geyer and Jacob Artist.

Glee Season 4 premieres in September.
