My grandfather was drafted into World War II and served for many years away from his family, friends and loved ones. He sacrificed so much of his own time, dreams and personal ambitions to serve our country. He once told me that he had to go and fight that war so that his future children and grandchildren like me could live peacefully and without worry.

For the longest time I could not grasp or begin to comprehend what he meant by that. But now more than ever I can see that there was so much wisdom in what he told me. The rest of the world must now be beginning to see America as a very strange representative and symbol of freedom, power and democracy.

We’ve recently dedicated so much of our wealth, treasure and military to be involved in so many wars and military operations overseas, killing or wounding tens of thousands of American soldiers whose families have been ripped apart by these unnecessary wars. We have over 45,000 people in our country that die each year because they do not have health insurance, well over 842,000 citizens becoming homeless every week, 24 million people in our country that cannot find a full-time job, 50 million uninsured Americans that cant see a doctor when they’re sick, and 47 million people in our country that depends on the government in order to even feed themselves. Whereas in our foreign military engagements we’ve killed or wounded hundreds of thousands of the people our political leaders deem as our “enemy” and aided in depleting a national wealth that had been accumulated over the course of two centuries.

We’ve been involved in these conflicts for nearly half my life now. I really cannot begin to fathom what has been gained after all these long and difficult years of conflict, but I hope our lessons will be learned. If you know anybody who is serving or has served in our military please thank them for their service this Veterans Day. It is because of these brave men and women that we are so free.
